One-day program

Nadarska Cave, Rufinka's Grave & Gorlo Canyon

A gentle full day joining an undeveloped marble cave, the village of Rufinka from an old Rhodope song, and a boat trip through Gorlo Canyon.

The day

  • Nadarska Cave
  • Poprelka & Rufinka's grave
  • Gorlo Canyon

The day begins at Nadarska Cave, a small undeveloped cave a few metres underground, a little world of formations hidden just below the surface. Guides hand out helmets and headlamps before you enter.

Next is the village of Poprelka, home of Rufinka, a real woman who lived here more than 100 years ago and is remembered in a traditional Rhodope song. You can see her grave, where a plant her mother set is said to still grow. On the way, passing through Kremene, you see the Holy Trinity church. This section is a light, panoramic walk of about 2 to 3 hours.

The day ends with a boat ride through Gorlo Canyon, cut by the Arda river through marble cliffs and about 100 metres long.

What to bring. Comfortable hiking boots, season-appropriate clothing, and a small backpack with water, food and rain protection. You need your own vehicle to reach the cave and canyon trailheads. Mountain insurance is highly recommended, and the guides are happy to help you arrange it.
