Eight ways into the mountains
The walks the society knows by heart, from a short guided visit to a marble cave to a full day on a fortress ridge. Every route can be walked with a local guide; please ask in advance.
Gorlo Canyon
Take a boat between the marble walls of Gorlo Canyon on the Arda River. Find directions from Smilyan and contact details to arrange your visit.
Kartalov Clearings
A 15 km loop linking a 4,000-year-old rock inscription, Nadarska Cave, high stone villages, Kartalov Kamak (1,478 m) and an 1896 church.
Lisagora Panoramic Tower
A 19-metre steel tower on Lisa Gora (1,424 m) with a 360° view over the Upper Arda and the Central Rhodopes. The area's newest attraction.
Mount Kom
A walk up a Rhodope ridge held sacred since antiquity, past an ancient sanctuary and a restored chapel, with legends of treasure and refuge.
Nadarska Cave
Explore Nadarska Cave near Mogilitsa with a guide: two marble galleries filled with stalactites and stalagmites. Visits are arranged in advance.
Source of the Arda & Ardin Peak
A panoramic walk to the spring of the Arda beneath a century-old beech, with an optional climb to Ardin Peak (1,742 m) on the Greek border.
The Peak Viewpoint
Step onto the glass end of The Peak viewpoint at 1,351 m above sea level and look out across the Rhodopes. Reach it on foot or by jeep from Mogilitsa.
Varadsko Fortress
A 19 km route to a rocky peak at 1,510 m with ancient defensive walls, past the abandoned village of Varad and a 'sea of mountains' view.
